Wrestling Vava Marques could be relaxing in his native Brazil right now, taking a much-needed break from coaching college and club soccer. Instead, Marques is pacing the sidelines for Los Altos High. He took over the boys team this season at the urging of Los Altos players and parents associated with World United, Marques' under-15 boys club team. And so far, Marques has no regrets about forgoing his month-long vacation. "I'm glad I did stay," he said. "I'm having fun coaching these kids." Coaching a high school team is a new experience for Marques, who recently completed his ninth season as the men's coach at Foothill College. Los Altos athletic director Monica Lodge said the Eagles are fortunate to have Marques on board. "Vava's going to be good," Lodge said. "He has a very good soccer background." Marques, who once played professionally in Brazil, has a different approach to the game than last year's coach, Paul Lester. Marques said he stresses fewer long passes and more short ones to keep longer possession of the ball. "The team's going through a transition because this is a different type of soccer," he said. "We're having our ups and downs, but we're still winning." The Eagles entered the week with a 4-0 record, which included a 1-0 win last Thursday over Mountain View. Armando Luna scored the game-winner late in the first half on a free kick In other boys soccer action last week, St. Francis High went to 6-0 on the season Saturday by beating visiting Aragon 2-0. Aaron Perego scored one goal and assisted on the other. Los Altos opened its season by winning the B Division of the Westmont Duals last Saturday. Aaron Kash (130 pounds), Ian Bailey (135), Matt Young (140), Chris Mazurkiewicz (189) and Anthony Davis went unbeaten. |
