Day worker task force meets Thursday

The dual Los Altos-Mountain View task force considering the day-worker issue, will be meeting tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Conference Room, Mountain View City Hall, 500 Castro St., Mountain View.

Victor Narro, an expert on day-worker issues and solutions in the Los Angeles area, will be speaking to the committee, said Layne Long, assistant to the Los Altos City Manager.

The committee will also be reviewing information from eight cities in the Bay Area and solutions they have worked out for day-worker questions.

From that, the committee will choose some worker centers to visit early in the new year.

There will be one more meeting of the task force at which they will develop recommendations that will then come back to each of the city councils, Long said.

Supes OK services for child victims

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, who represents the north county including Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, announced a new program to help children who are victims of abuse.

The new program will provide closed-circuit televising of testimony of children who are victims of abuse.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office prosecutes more than 200 cases each year involving children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse.

"Our goal is to provide a secure, comfortable setting for testifying and make it as easy as possible for the children," Simitian said.

Cost of implementing the program will be covered by a $99,647 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
