Roaming dogs pose a danger

Three weeks ago one of our two dogs - a gentle, 10-pound silky terrier - was mauled to death by a Rottweiler that lives about a quarter-mile from our home in Los Altos Hills.

Our dogs were in a secure, fenced-in area on our property at the time. The Rottweiler, which has been known to roam the neighborhood, was able to scale a low part in the fence, get in, and kill our Sammy.

We have lived in Los Altos Hills for more than five years, and we've noticed that more and more neighborhood dogs are being allowed to leave their owner's property off-leash and unattended.

It's time these dog owners realize how irresponsible - and potentially deadly - their actions are.

As painful as our experience was, we shudder to think of the unbearable tragedy that would have resulted if Sammy had been a small child.

If you are a dog owner who allows your dog to roam the neighborhood unattended, please stop immediately. Your carelessness endangers not only your own dog, but poses a threat to your neighbors and their pets as well.

Sammy was a part of our family, and we miss him terribly. With little effort, his senseless death could have been prevented.
