The Owls were led by freshman Ekuah Ramsey, who poured in 15 points. Sheree Taft added 14 points, while Stacy Hanstad contributed 12. Foothill is next in action on Sunday when it opens play in the De Anza College Tournament in Cupertino. Football Playing 16 games in 37 days has taken its toll on the Foothill College men's basketball team, according to coach Todd Petersen. The first-year coach offers last Saturday's game - No. 16 - as proof. Playing for third place in the Kris Kringle Classic in Santa Rosa, the Owls pulled within four points of powerhouse Skyline with five minutes left. And then the Owls' collapsed. "We ran out of gas," Petersen said. "I tried everything I could to jump start them, but nothing worked. It was like beating a dead horse." Skyline soon hit a few three-pointers that helped seal a 70-60 win. The Owls, who were led by Randall Powell's 13 points, dropped to 8-8 on the season. The team will now take a much-needed break, with no games scheduled until Jan. 3. That's the day Foothill will travel to Skyline (11-2) for a rematch. Petersen hopes Foothill will have more energy this time around. Foothill had the fourth-best football team in the state this year, according to a coaches poll conducted by the Junior College Athletic Bureau. This is the highest the Owls have ever finished in the final poll, which was released last week. Foothill went 10-1 this season and beat West Valley Dec. 5 in the Kiwanis Silicon Valley Bowl. The top three teams in the state poll were Palomar (11-1), San Francisco (11-1) and Long Beach (10-1). Foothill finished second in the Northern California rankings behind division foe San Francisco, who dealt the Owls their only loss. |
