December is the month high school basketball teams gear up for league play by competing in various tournaments.

And if last weekend was any indication, the girls teams from St. Francis and Pinewood are more than ready.

St. Francis (6-1) captured the Tennyson Classic in Hayward Saturday with a convincing 62-49 triumph over the host school.

Meanwhile, Pinewood (6-0) breezed through the competitive Branson Tournament in Ross, dismantling Terra Linda 66-43 in Saturday's championship game.

The Lancers, which lost to Pinewood two weeks ago in the semifinals of the Gator Classic in Atherton, cruised through the Tennyson tournament with an effective mix of balanced scoring.

Five Lancers scored eight or more points in the title game, led by Becky Biniek's 14 points. St. Francis pulled away in the second half by outscoring Tennyson 31-22.

St. Francis walloped Menlo-Atherton 58-38 in Friday's semifinal, as senior Chrissy Hirsch led the Lancers with 16 points.

Hirsch was named tournament MVP, while twin sister Cindy Hirsch and Christine Capuyan were voted to the all-tourney team.

Senior point guard Lauren Smith-Hams led Pinewood on Saturday with a season-high 31 points, which included four three-pointers.

The Panthers peaked in the second half, outscoring Terra Linda 31-16. Sophomore Sebnum Kimyacioglu added 18 points for Pinewood.

Smith-Hams and Kimyacioglu tallied 18 points apiece Friday in Pinewood's 60-48 semifinal win over host Branson. The two schools could meet later in the year in the NorCal Division V playoffs.

St. Francis, Pinewood and the other area schools begin play in their respective leagues early next month.

Mountain View dropped a 44-34 decision to visiting James Lick Dec. 15.

Stephanie Stewart led the Spartans with 13 points, while Selena Lewis added 10. The loss dropped Mountain View's overall record to 4-3.

Homestead went to 10-2 on the season Dec. 16 by walloping visiting Eastside Prep 64-13.

The Mustangs received eight points each from Diana Lee and Chris Strombel.

Gunn reached the championship of the Half Moon Bay Tournament Saturday with a 63-50 semifinal win over South San Francisco.

The Titans had four players score in double figures: Correnda Perkins (16 points), Katherine Wang (15), Katy Tripp (14) and Gelater Fullwood (12).

In Friday's first-round game, Gunn shot down Mills 67-28. Perkins led the way with 20 points and Fullwood had 19.

Gunn (5-3) competed for the championship Monday, a game played after the Town Crier went to press.
