ABL folds

The American Basketball League is nothing more than a memory. The women's pro league, co-founded by area residents Gary Cavalli (Los Altos), Steve Hams (Mountain View) and Anne Cribbs (Palo Alto), shut down Dec. 22. "At this point, the league is out of money," Cavalli said in a statement. "This is a sad day for our fans, employees, players and coaches, and for women's basketball in general." The nine-team ABL, in its third season, took a serious hit last year when the rival WNBA opened for business.

Bowled over

Football players Pete Holland and Brad Brennan, graduates of Homestead and St. Francis highs, respectively, will be playing in college bowl games this week. Holland is a defensive tackle for UCLA, which takes on Wisconsin in Friday's Rose Bowl. ABC will televise the game, set to kick-off at 1:30 p.m. Brennan is a receiver for Arizona, which plays Nebraska in tonight's Holiday Bowl. ESPN will televise the game at 5 p.m.

Play ball

Baseball season is a few months away, but Little League sign-ups for those age 16 and under are right around the corner. Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Little League will hold sign-ups from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 9 and 16, and 5-8 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.
