ViewBy Pete Borello / Town Crier Staff WriterPrep Girls Hoop Scoop Eagles get a win Los Altos High won its first game of the season Dec. 21, beating Mount Eden 44-31 in the first round of the Irvington Tournament. Marisa Whitlock scored 20 points to pace the Eagles. Los Altos went on to lose its final two tourney games to Dublin and San Leandro, dropping the team's record to 1-9. SF, Pinewood move on The Mountain View High girls basketball team has struggled thus far this season, but help may be on the way. Toccara Lee, an all-league player as a sophomore last year, is apparently set to rejoin the Spartans. Lee moved to Arkansas over the summer, but Mountain View coach Karl Hawkins said she didn't find southern living to her liking and recently moved back to the area. Lee has re-enrolled at Mountain View and has talked with Hawkins about returning to the team. The coach said he hopes to have the 5-foot-10 forward back on the court by mid-January. "It would be nice to have her back," Hawkins said. "She could really help us." Mountain View, off to a 4-5 start, could certainly use Lee's scoring ability. The Spartans totaled just 51 points in two games last week. After dropping a 46-17 decision to Leigh Dec. 21 in the opening round of the Cupertino Holiday Tournament, Mountain View fell 39-34 to Andrew Hill Dec. 22 in the second round. The Spartans didn't have a double-digit scorer in either game. Jenneene Padilla scored nine points vs. Leigh and Kelsey Nakano had eight against Hill. St. Francis and Pinewood got off to good starts at the Mitty New Year's Tournament last Saturday with convincing first-round wins. St. Francis crushed Piedmont Hills 56-34, while Pinewood pounded Wooster 70-54. St. Francis (8-1) jumped out to a 22-4 opening-quarter lead and went up 34-10 by the half. The Lancers set the tone with defense, according to coach Mike DeCarlo. "We played full-court, man-to-man defense and forced a lot of turnovers, which led to easy baskets," DeCarlo said. "We must have scored 12-14 points on lay-ins." Chrissy Hirsch scored a team-high 14 points for St. Francis, while Betsy Butterick added 11. Pinewood (7-0) also got out to a large lead early on against Wooster. The Panthers led 29-9 after the first quarter and 46-15 at intermission. They hit nine three-pointers in the initial half - five by Lauren Smith-Hams and four by Antoinette McLean. Smith-Hams scored 23 points in all, while Sebnum Kimyacioglu added 15 points and 17 rebounds. "Sebnum was fabulous," said Pinewood coach Doc Scheppler. The Mitty Tournament finishes up today.
