MV wins consolation

Mountain View High, under former Palo Alto High coach Jim Forthoffer, upended Gunn 48-44 to win the consolation championship of the Fremont tournament.

The surprising Spartans (7-3) never looked back after jumping out to a 15-2 first quarter lead. Senior Seth Greenstein continued his outstanding season with a game-high 23 points. Teammate Nic Lustig chipped in 13 points.

Gunn (6-3) was paced by senior Jamar Barnett's 16 points, as senior Tom Sikic and junior Steven Baker added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Greenstein, Buck and St. Francis' Mike Juco and Chase Lyman were tabbed to the all-tournament team.

Mustangs stumble

In non-league action, Homestead High fell to 3-7 on the season Dec. 22 after a 53-42 setback to visiting Prospect.

The Mustangs trailed by only a point entering the fourth quarter, but were outscored 21-12 in the final frame.

Matt Hoffman led Homestead with 11 points. Steve Lambert scored nine and Dat Lai added eight.

Eagles grounded

The St. Francis High boys basketball team found out the power of team unity last week under dire circumstances.

Coping with the death of fellow student Justin Osborne, who died in an auto accident Dec. 20, the Lancers pulled together like never before in capturing the Fremont-Sunnyvale Holiday Tournament. The Lancers beat a talented Piedmont Hills team 60-56 in the Dec. 22 championship game.

St. Francis (8-0) won four straight tournament games and gave notice to the rugged West Catholic Athletic League that it will be a team to be reckoned with when league play starts in two weeks.

Utilizing a 1-2-2 match-up zone, the Lancers neutralized Piedmont's high-scoring attack and grabbed a commanding 35-24 halftime lead. Piedmont (10-2) produced a late rally, but the Lancers held on en route to the tournament crown.

Adam Buck led the Lancers with 15 points, while sophomore Troy Bienemann added 13 points.

In another non-league game last week, Los Altos High fell to host Burlingame 57-51.

The Dec. 23 loss dropped the Eagles record to 5-5 on the season.

Sophomore center Geoff Patterson paced the Eagles with 28 points, while Ryan Brown contributed 10.
