SF fifth at Mitty The goal for most high school basketball coaches in the preseason is to build unity, find the right combinations and peak going into league play. And it appears the Homestead High girls team is heading in the right direction after a successful preseason campaign. Utilizing an effective three-guard lineup, Homestead has compiled an impressive 13-2 record after capturing last week's Del Mar Tournament in San Jose. The Mustangs drilled El Camino 63-43 in the title game Dec. 30 behind Julia Randall and Michelle Wald, who tallied 16 and 11 points, respectively. Randall and Julie Speckels were named to the all-tournament team. "We used the preseason to come together and it's a big reason for our success," said Homestead's first-year co-head coach, Wade Nakamura. "They have worked hard and become a team on and off the court." Wald, along with Los Altos residents Shelly Mellberg and Speckels, comprise a productive backcourt that will lead the Mustangs into the rugged SCVAL De Anza Division. Homestead opens league play at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Santa Clara, then hosts Monta Vista at 5 p.m. Friday. St. Francis (10-2) finished fifth in the Mitty New Year's Classic after drubbing Presentation 56-45 on Dec. 30. Twins Chrissy and Cindy Hirsch tallied an identical 12 points apiece for the Lancers. Center Becky Biniek added eight points. St. Francis opens De Anza Division play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fremont of Sunnyvale. |
