The "Impressionists in Winter" exhibit, which opens at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco on Jan. 31, reminds us that the French Impressions painted landscapes outdoors throughout the year.
Carol Nelson, docent for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will review this show of more than 60 works on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Los Altos Main Library.
The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the city of Los Altos, Friends of the Los Altos Library, and the Los Altos Arts Committee.
Snow scenes they admired in Japanese prints encouraged painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro and Alfred Sisley to add wintry landscapes to their repertoires. The show includes little-known pictures by Paul Gauguin, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Gustave Caillebotte.
Nelson's interest in European Art began when she majored in French at Stanford University. She has lived in France, and focuses her lectures on French history and arts.
Other upcoming arts lectures at the Los Altos Library will include: lecturer Kay Payne, manager of the docent program for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, speaking March 3 on an upcoming exhibition involving treasures from the Victoria and Albert Museum; and Cory Cullinan, a composer and instructor at Pinewood School in Los Altos, talking on writing and performing electronic music on April 21.
