The Los Altos High wrestling team has cleared the first hurdle in its quest for the SCVAL De Anza Division crown.
The Eagles opened division competition last Thursday with a 34-31 win over host Monta Vista, a team ranked 25th in the state.
"I'm pretty happy," said Los Altos coach Nick Testa. "We wrestled well against the toughest team in the league."
The Eagles, who entered the match at 13-1 overall, won seven weight classes.
Los Altos winners included Cesar Valle (125 pounds), Aaron Kash (130), Ian Bailey (135), Sonny Mohammadzadeh (145), Matt Charles (152), Noble Millie (171) and Chris Mazurkiewicz (189).
Kash, Bailey, Charles and Mazurkiewicz performed particularly well, Testa said. All four wrestlers recorded pins, with Kash and Mazurkiewicz doing so in just under three minutes.
Los Altos wrestled again last Saturday, taking part in the ultra-competitive San Ramon Invitational.
The Eagles captured fourth at the all-day event, as seven of their wrestlers placed.
Anthony Davis (215) and Valle earned seconds, Bailey and Millie grabbed thirds, Matt Young (140) and Kash secured fourths and Charles took fifth.
Bailey lost by one point to last year's section champ from Mission-San Jose, Testa said. Bailey still has the best winning percentage on the team, though, posting a 20-2 overall mark.
But Bailey isn't the only Los Altos wrestler off to a good start this season. Davis (20-2), Kash (20-5), Young (19-4) and Valle (7-2) have also run up impressive records.
The Eagles are next in action at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow when division opponent Saratoga pays a visit. On Saturday, Los Altos competes in the Ceres Duals.
St. Francis placed ninth at the Gary Bianchini Memorial Tournament last Saturday at Cupertino High.
The Lancers scored 86 points and had two wrestlers place: Justin Olmos (third at 160) and John Adams (second at 215).
Gunn opened SCVAL El Camino Division competition on a sour note last Thursday, falling 66-12 to visiting Wilcox.
The under-manned Titans had to forfeit six weight classes. Their only wins came on pins by Sean MaCurdy (130) and Steve Isacc (171).
