The very existence of the longstanding Loyola Corners Business Improvement District is up for a vote before the district's 41 businesses in and around Miramonte and Fremont avenues in south Los Altos.

In a recent election of the business district, only 12 businesses participated in voting. Up for a decision was the continuance of the district's existence and a change in the time and location of the Farmers' Market.

District president Dick Frederick declared a new election because of the indecisiveness of the recent election.

Business owners will have another chance at voting on these issues:

Should the Loyola Corner's Farmers' Market be moved from Sunday morning in the Bank of America (Fremont Avenue) parking lot, to Saturday mornings in the parking plaza behind the retailers on Fremont Avenue?

Should the Loyola Corners Business Improvement District continue to exist as an organization, supported by members' assessments?

The district is a nonprofit association that promotes various activities and projects aimed at increasing awareness of the neighborhood commercial area.

The district was formed in 1953 and is one of the smallest in the state. It is the only one in Los Altos. Each member is assessed a fee which the district uses to promote the continuation of Loyola Corners as a viable retail and business area.

In recent times, members have not paid their assessment, leaving the district's future in jeopardy.

District spokeswoman Carol Curran said another ballot was being hand-delivered this week to each Loyola Corners business eligible to vote and the persons delivering the ballot would wait to ensure the ballots are filled out this time.

The ballots will then be placed in a sealed envelope and hand-delivered to Los Altos City Clerk Carol Scharz. She will count the ballots and validate the results. Final election results should be available by this coming Monday.
