Kindergarten teachers and administrators will be on hand to answer questions. To be eligible for the district's 1999-2000 kindergarten program, children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2, 1999 and reside within district boundaries. Pre-registration will begin at all six elementary schools at 7 a.m., Feb. 4. Mac's holds fund-raiser for new LAHS pool Mac's American Grill, 325 Main St., Los Altos, will donate a portion of its proceeds from Monday night to the Los Altos High School Athletic Facilities Fund in support of the construction of the school's new 25-yard, 30-meter pool. Mac's is among four local restaurants hosting a Monday Night Profit-Sharing Dinner. Upcoming Monday night dinners include: Feb. 8, Armadillo Willy's, 1031 N. Debra Babcock and Mark Rosekind will discuss the affects of a good night's sleep on children from 7:30-9 tonight in the multipurpose Room at Oak School, 1501 Oak Ave. The lecture is the first of three parent education seminars to be held at Oak School. Sister Cities annual meeting The public is invited to the annual meeting of the Los Altos Sister Cities, scheduled for 6 p.m., Jan. 28, at the Los Altos Garden House, 400 University Ave. The Los Altos High School Main Street Singers will be the featured entertainment. Refreshments will be served by Chef Chu's. The meeting will be a review of activities with the sister cities of Bendigo, Australia, Syktyvkar, Russia, and Shih Lin, Taiwan, and feature discussion of plans for 1999. AAUW presents women authors The American Association of University Women (AAUW) celebrates Bay Area authors with a book signing for Wendy Tokuda and an author's luncheon featuring four other writers on Saturday, at the Garden House, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. Tokuda, KRON Channel 4 newscaster, will be presenting her new children's book, "Samson The Hot Tub Bear," at 10:45 a.m. Cookies and drinks will be available to parents and children. There is no charge for this event. Tokuda's book is a true story about an injured bear who is saved from being euthanized through the generosity of residents. The bear eventually finds a home in the Orange County Zoo. Tokuda wrote the book after having reported the story in 1994 for a television station in Los Angeles. The second event is an author's luncheon for adults at 12:15 p.m., featuring Diane Middlebrook, Adam Hochschild, Francisco Jimenez and Lois Levine. The luncheon is a benefit for AAUW's educational foundation, which offers annual awards to graduate women around the world. Cost for the luncheon is $25, and the meal will be catered by Chef Chu's of Los Altos. For reservations, call 917-8027. Winter book sale scheduled The Friends of the Los Altos Library will hold its winter book sale Friday through Sunday at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., in Los Altos. The Friday sale is open from 7-9 p.m. for members only. Family memberships are available at the main library for $5. Memberships will not be sold on opening night. The sale is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. On Sunday, books are sold by the bag only. Bags are available at the door for $2 each and there is no limit to the number of bags purchased. All proceeds from the sale go to the library. No checks are accepted. Albert Schultz open house The Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center invites the public to participate in an open house from 9 a.m. to noon, this coming Sunday, in the center's fitness center at 655 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto. Organizers said the goal is to start the New Year with better health and fitness. The black tie optional event will honor Los Altos Mayor Lou Becker and Los Altos Hills Mayor Bob Johnson. In conjunction with the mayors' salutes, the seventh annual Walter and Marie Singer Business Volunteer Award will be presented to the business volunteer of the year. No-host cocktails start at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner 7:30 p.m. then dancing. Music will be provided by "A Sound Investment" and feature dancing until 11 p.m. The future of Medicare "The Future of Medicare" with health expert Dorothy Rice will be the topic for the Los Altos Senior Coordinating Council meeting, noon, next Tuesday, in Room A at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. Bring your own lunch or make a reservation for lunch through the Senior Center by calling 948-7483 by Friday.
