Those wondering which local boys soccer team is better - Los Altos or Homestead - will have to wait until the second half of the season to find out.
The two SCVAL De Anza Division powers played to a 2-2 tie last Thursday in Los Altos.
The teams will meet again Feb. 9 at Homestead. And Los Altos coach Vava Marquess hopes to have injured forward Verdine Baker (knee) back by then.
The Eagles (3-1-2 division, 8-2-2 overall) received goals from Armando Luna and Arend Accola Thursday. Scoring for the Mustangs (3-1-2, 8-5-2) were Omar Gusmao and Anthony Herrern.
In other boys' action Thursday, Gunn defeated host Wilcox 1-0 on a first-half goal by Lumi Sonuga.
The Titans (5-0-1 SCVAL El Camino Division, 6-2-2 overall) played most of the game shorthanded because goalie Steve Foote was ejected early in the first half for making an illegal slide tackle.
Mountain View's struggles continued with a 2-1 loss at Lynbrook. The Spartans (1-3-2 El Camino, 3-8-3 overall) got their lone goal from Chad Arney.
St. Francis defeated host Sacred Heart Cathedral 2-1 on goals by Michael Bustos and Dan Van Der Veen.
This put the Lancers at 4-2-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League and 11-2-2 overall.
Pinewood played Notre Dame-San Jose to a scoreless tie Jan. 12 in Los Altos Hills.
The Panthers' best scoring opportunity came in the second half on Tracy Ratko's free kick, which Kathy Gallagher headed just over the crossbar.
The tie kept Pinewood in second place in the Private Schools Athletic League at 4-1-1. The Panthers (5-5-1 overall) can't afford to finish the season any lower than that if they hope to make the playoffs, according to coach Michael Tetzlaff.
Last Thursday, Gunn defeated visiting Los Altos 2-0 in SCVAL De Anza Division play.
The Titans scored on a penalty kick by Christina Morrison and a shot by Tamar Petrosian. The win put Gunn at 4-2-1 in the division and 7-4-1 overall. The Eagles sunk to 0-3-2 in the division.
Two days earlier, Mountain View dropped a 5-2 decision at Gunn, putting the Spartans' De Anza Division mark at 0-4-2.
St. Francis ran its De Anza Division record to 5-0-1 with a 2-0 victory at Monta Vista Jan. 12.
Kristi Candau scored both goals for the Lancers (9-1-3 overall).
Despite playing Palo Alto to a scoreless tie Jan. 12, Homestead remained atop the SCVAL El Camino Division
The host Mustangs went to 4-0-1 in the division and 10-0-2 overall.
