After two weeks of the league season, local area boys and girls basketball races are beginning to take shape.
At Los Altos High, it's been tough luck thus far, but there's still a long way to go.
The boys dropped to 0-3 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 3-12 overall after losing at Palo Alto 59-41 Jan. 13. Sophomore Geoff Patterson and senior Ryan Brown led the Eagles with 12 points apiece.
One day earlier, the Los Altos girls were edged by Saratoga 38-36. The Eagles (1-2 El Camino Division, 2-11 overall) were outscored 10-6 in the fourth quarter. They were led by junior Marisa Whitlock's 11 points.
The Mountain View boys remained perfect in the El Camino Division at 2-0 after drubbing Monta Vista 42-29 Jan. 13. The Spartans (11-5 overall), who played Gunn for first place last Friday, were paced by senior Seth Greenstein's 17 points.
The Spartan girls fell to 0-3 in the El Camino Division and 4-9 overall following a 60-28 setback to Milpitas Jan. 12.
The St. Francis boys improved to 2-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League and 14-1 overall after whipping Serra 57-49 Jan. 13. Junior Chase Lyman had a spectacular night, pumping in 23 points for the Lancers.
The St. Francis girls (2-0, 13-2) remained in first place in the SCVAL De Anza Division with two wins last week. The Lancers defeated Los Gatos 60-26 Jan. 12 and then pounded Palo Alto 59-39 last Thursday. Sophomore Christine Capuyan tallied 13 points against Los Gatos, while Chrissy Hirsch scored 12 on Paly.
The Gunn boys (3-0, 10-3) stayed in first place in the El Camino Division by beating Cupertino 54-47 Jan. 13, as senior Tom Sikic tallied a season-high 27 points.
The Titan girls also won, bombing Lynbrook 53-31 Jan. 12. Gunn (2-1 El Camino Division, 8-4 overall) was led by senior Correnda Perkins' 22 points.
The Pinewood girls (3-0, 13-1) continue to cruise through the Private Schools Athletic League, spanking Immaculate Conception 84-32 Jan. 12. Senior point guard Lauren Smith-Hams and sophomore Sebnum Kimyacioglu tallied 31 and 18 points, respectively.
The Panther boys won their first league game of the year Jan. 12, beating Woodside Priory 47-42. Junior Chris Gustafson and senior David Bebb scored 13 points apiece.
The Homestead girls (3-0 De Anza Division, 16-2 overall) drubbed Palo Alto 50-37 Jan. 12 behind junior Marie Levey's 12 points.
A day later, the Mustang boys (1-2 El Camino, 4-11 overall) lost to Saratoga 56-39.
