The Foothill College women's basketball team overcame a shaky start to beat rival De Anza College 72-52 Jan. 13 in Cupertino.
The Owls trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, which didn't sit too well with coach Jody Craig.
"It was making me nervous," Craig said. "We didn't shoot well. We also weren't getting back in transition and they were getting some easy baskets off us. We were playing right into their hands."
Foothill started to awake from its slumber in the final five minutes of the first half when Craig switched defenses. The Owls experimented with zone - a scheme they rarely use - and De Anza had a hard time adjusting to it.
"We were able to take them out of their rhythm and flow," Craig said.
The Owls went into the locker room down 34-29, but the momentum was clearly beginning to sway in their favor.
Foothill opened the second half in zone and then quickly reverted to man-to-man, further befuddling the young Dons.
Meanwhile, the Foothill offense started heating up.
The Owls wound up shooting a whopping 55 percent in the half, out-scoring the Dons 38-23 in the process.
"We got in an offensive flow early in the second half and set the tone," Craig said. "We took over the game and never looked back."
By game's end, Foothill freshman Ekuah Ramsey had 18 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Line Kongeskov scored 14 points and Jennifer Tsang added 12.
The win improved Foothill's record to 2-1 in conference play and 11-9 overall.
The Owls entertain Mission College of Santa Clara at 7 p.m. tonight.
The Foothill men's basketball team (10-9 overall) returns to the hardwood at 7 p.m. tonight at West Valley College in Saratoga.
