A 71-year-old Mountain View woman died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver as she was crossing El Camino Real at Showers Drive about 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 18, police said.

Police later arrested a 28-year-old San Jose man, Jesus Angel DeAnda Aguirre, on a charge of felony hit and run.

Aguirre fled the scene and then abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away at California Avenue and Showers Drive, police said.

He then took off on foot but was later found and taken into custody on Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino, police said, near a place he had formerly been employed.

The victim, Hilda Culig, was taken to Stanford Hospital where she died at 3 p.m. of multiple traumatic injuries, a coroner's spokeswoman said.

Culig had been crossing El Camino Real from the Mountain View side to the Los Altos side. She made it to the center median, police said.

After the light changed, she continued across the street, and came out in front of a vehicle making a left turn onto Showers.

Aguirre was an unlicensed driver, police said, and was driving a friend's car.

Rain was falling steadily and visibility was poor, witnesses said.

Los Altos has not had a fatal traffic-related accident since 1996 when there were two, said Los Altos Police Capt. Jerry Little.
