Intradistrict transfers at Fremont Union Parents or guardians who live within the Fremont Union High School District boundaries may request student placement at another school in the district where space is available for the 1999-2000 school year. Intradistrict transfer request forms must be submitted no later than March 31. All students must initially register at their school of residence. Parents or guardians may then submit intradistrict transfer requests to the principal of the school of residence no later than March 31. Forms are available at the high schools. Parents will be notified on or before June 1 of the disposition of their requests. Fremont and Homestead high schools are open for intradistrict transfers. Cupertino, Lynbrook and Monta Vista high schools are at capacity for the 1999-2000 school year. Springer School site of blood drive The Los Altos-Mountain View PTA council will be holding a blood drive from 1:45 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at the multi-use room at Springer School, 1120 Rose Ave., Mountain View. The staff from the Stanford Blood Center will be taking the blood donations. Drop-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred. Child care will be provided. Pre-registration for LASD students Pre-registration for fall 1999-2000 kindergarten classes in the Los Altos School District will begin at 7 a.m., Feb. 4, at Almond, Bullis, Loyola, Oak, Santa Rita and Springer schools. To pre-register, parents must present a photocopy of both proof of the child's age - birth certificate, passport or baptismal certificate - proof of residence - rent receipt, house deed or utility bill in the name of the parent or guardian - to school officials. Parents may also wish to provide a photocopy of their child's immunization records. The school will then give each parent a numbered registration receipt and packet of information to be completed and returned between Feb. 10-26. To be eligible for next year's kindergarten, children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2, 1999, and parents must pre-register their children at the neighborhood school serving the attendance area of the legal residence of the parent or guardian. Kindergarteners through grade 4 are invited to visit the new campus at 4300 Bucknall Road in San Jose from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Grades 5-8 are invited to visit the campus at 500 Saratoga Ave. in San Jose from 4-5 p.m. For more information, call (408) 249-2510. Benefit concert at Los Altos High The bands and orchestras from Los Altos High and Egan Junior High schools will perform from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, at the Los Altos High School cafeteria during the annual concert and dessert fund-raiser. Tickets are $7 in advance and $7.50 at the door. Children under 3 are free. Proceeds from the evening will go to support all of the bands and orchestra programs at the high school. High school district holds study session Parents and community members are invited to participate in a study session to discuss Student Assessment practices in the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District from 7-9 p.m., Feb. 22, in the district's board room at 1299 Bryant Ave., in Mountain View. UCSC hosts environmental fair The University of California at Santa Cruz is hosting its fourth annual Resources in Environmental Education Fair for K-12 teachers from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 6, at the UCSC extension, 10420 Bubb Road, in Cupertino. There is a $15 fee. The event will feature workshops, exhibits and networking designed to bring awareness and make available local Santa Clara environmental education programs and resources to teachers, educators, youth program leaders and recreational leaders. Resurrection school hosts open house Resurrection Parish School will be open for family visitation from 3-4:45 p.m., Saturday, at 1395 Hollenbeck Ave., in Sunnyvale. Tutoring club opens new location The Tutoring Club recently opened its third location at the Blossom Valley Shopping Center in Mountain View. The new store provides educational services from kindergarten to college-age students and offers individual programs for reading, math, chemistry, history, English and SAT preparation. MVHS hosts 'Taste of Jazz' The Mountain View High School Music Department will host its annual casino night, "A Taste of Jazz," from 6:30-11 p.m., March 13 at St. Joseph School, 1120 Miramonte Ave., in Mountain View. Admission is $20 and includes starter chips for blackjack, craps, roulette, a raffle, light buffet and a chance to win the grand prize. There will also be wine tasting and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the music department. Mandarin classes open to children The nonprofit Hwa Shin Chinese School will sponsor two after-school Chinese language and cultural programs from Tuesday to May 31 at Juana Briones School, 4100 Orme St., in Palo Alto. The focus will be on vocabulary, speaking and reading skills that will be reinforced through song, stories, arts, games and mathematics. Tutition is $300 for the semester plus $40 for materials. Classes will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. There will also be daily classes for Kindergarten to grade 3 children. For more information, call 948-2057. 'Voice for Animals' essay contest The Humane Education Network of Menlo Park is holding its ninth annual "A Voice for Animals" essay contest. The contest is open to all high school students, with prizes awarded to essays that best promote the humane treatment of animals in the United States.
