David Shur, son of Robert D. and Paulette L. Shur of Los Altos, recently performed at Whitman College's annual fall "Sampler."

Shur, a 1997 graduate of Los Altos High School, is a sophomore at Whitman.

Matthew Crichton Burchard, Jeffrey A. Paulson and James G. Scripps, all of Los Altos, were among the approximately 700 students at the University of Oregon to receive degrees Dec. 11.

Burchard earned a bachelor's degree in political science; Paulson received a bachelor's degree in psychology; and Scripps received a bachelor's degree in journalism and history.

Los Altos residents Alex Mei, Samantha Lee Schneider and Matthew Paul Bailey and Mountain View residents Darren M. Tidwell, Heather Ann Deem, Jack Onkit Ip and Ramil Garlit Quintos were among the 1,000 students to participate in Cal Poly's 1998 fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 12.

Jameson Amato, a 1996 graduate of Los Altos High School, was recently named to the dean's list at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for earning a 4.0 grade point average for the 1998 fall quarter.

Karl Gabor Varsanyi of Los Altos Hills and Gina Marie Biegel of Mountain View were recently named to the dean's list at the University of California at Santa Barbara for the 1998 fall quarter for achieving 3.7 or higher grade point averages.

Varsanyi is majoring in business economics.

Biegel is majoring in communication.

Jared Parkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brad Parkinson of Los Altos, achieved honor roll status for the first trimester of 1998-99 at Tilton School. Tilton is an independent prep school in New Hampshire serving students in grades 9 through the postgraduate year.

Rhoda An Moss of Los Altos was recently awarded a bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Moss graduated from Mountain View High School in 1995. She grew up in Los Altos and attended Loyola Elementary and Blach Intermediate schools.

Seven students from Los Altos High School and eight students from Mountain View High School participated in the 1999 Santa Clara County Honor Band last Sunday. The Santa Clara County Band Directors Association selected 95 band members from among 45 high schools.

The Los Altos students included: Karen Dungan (clarinet), Ashley DuVal (trumpet), Scott Hayman (bassoon), Zachery Keats (piano), Chris Lin (bassoon), Jason Pelc (clarinet) and Aaron Staple (clarinet).

The Mountain View students included: Julie Baker (alto sax), Dane Clum (trombone), Anthony Arrouzet-Nardi (trumpet), Ali Fernbach (French horn), Ross Fischer (bass clarinet), Sarah Madden (flute), Carolyn Nobejl (piccolo/flute) and Stella Zubeck (clarinet).
