History House presents 'Music & Memories'

"Music & Memories," a collection of oral history readings with period music, will be presented from 2-3 p.m., Feb. 20, at the Los Altos History House Museum.

Music by Paul Price will include 1926 Victor recordings of the Stanford Marching Band. Admission is free.

The History House is located in the Los Altos Civic Center area at 51 S. San Antonio Road behind the Main Library.

CSA honors 'hometown hero'

The Community Services Agency of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View will be hosting a Valentine's Day breakfast to honor its 1999 "hometown hero," executive director Tom Pamilla.

Dick Henning, the founder of Celebrity Forum I and II, will be the event's guest speaker.

The breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m., Feb. 11, at Hyatt Rickey's in Palo Alto. Reservations are due by Thursday.

Radio doctor addresses Republican Assembly

The West Santa Clara Valley Republican Assembly will present Dr. Stan Monteith, of Radio Liberty in Santa Cruz, from 3 to 5 p.m. this Saturday at Mac's American Grill, 325 Main St., in Los Altos.

He will speak on globalism, the loss of American sovereignty and the Y2K problem. He practiced general orthopedic surgery in Santa Cruz for 34 years prior to his retirement.

He is the author of "AIDS: The Unnecessary Epidemic." Monteith has worked for more than a decade to address AIDS as a medical issue rather than a civil rights issue.

League focus on local communities

The League of Women Voters of the Los Altos-Mountain View area will host the second in a series of public workshops called "Building A Sustainable Community" on Feb. 14.

Local League members are responding to the California state League's proposed action policy regarding sustainability and are soliciting input. Participants will focus on local Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills needs and solutions related to such issues as housing, schools, youth activities, neighborhood support systems and access to quality health care for children. Discussion also will center on the international coordination of resources like food supplies.

Building sustainable communities centers on how decisions made by one sector of the community affect all the others and how opposing positions interrelate. The workshop will take place from 2-5 p.m. in the Los Altos Library Program Room, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Foundation presents 'Heart of the Community'

The Los Altos Community Foundation has scheduled its 1999 Heart of the Community Valentine Gala in the newly renovated Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel ballroom, formerly the Hyatt Cabana.

The Foundation's third annual event will be held on Feb. 13. It begins at 7 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and progresses to dinner, with dancing to follow. Black tie is optional.

The Los Altos Community Foundation is a volunteer organization with the mission to promote community-based philanthropy, establish positive relationships among community members, and create a vision for the future of the communities of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

New art exhibit in Los Altos Hills

Los Altos Hills announces that a new exhibit featuring local artists will be on display in the Los Altos Hills Council Chambers from 8 a.m. to noon and from 2-4 p.m. until March 31. Gloria Shiff will be displaying sculpture. Aris Balmori will be displaying ink paintings.

The chambers are located at 26379 Fremont Road, Los Altos Hills.

Shiff, an artist for more than 35 years, works from her Los Altos Hills studio. When she moved to California 20 years ago, she worked at San Jose State University.

Recently she won an award for her work with Venetian glass.

Balmori admires Zen-like calligraphy and graphics and is conscious of the impact of black ink combined with grays.

Humane Society spaying, neutering

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley offers spay-neuter surgery for half-off to help with pet overpopulation, prevent certain types of reproductive cancers and decrease chances of pets wandering away from home in search of a mate.
