The Los Altos High wrestling team's hopes of winning the SCVAL De Anza Division officially died last Thursday.

The Eagles conceded the title to Cupertino by losing a home match to Los Gatos 34-21.

The loss took Los Altos coach Nick Testa by surprise.

"I thought we'd kill (Los Gatos)," said Testa, whose team fell to 2-1-1 in the division. "But we lost a few close matches and we had some injuries that hurt us."

Heavyweight Anthony Davis, one of the Eagles' top wrestlers, dislocated a finger during his match and had to forfeit.

And Testa believes 145-pounder Sonny Mohammadzadeh lost his match due to the lingering affects of a concussion he suffered the prior week against Cupertino (3-1-1).

Only six Los Altos wrestlers came away with wins against Los Gatos: Andrew Bagley (119 pounds), Cesar Valle (125), Ian Bailey (135), Matt Charles (152), Noble Millie (171) and Tom West (215).

Bagley registered the Eagles' lone pin, and Testa said Charles was the team's best performer.

Los Altos (17-5-1 overall) wraps up division competition at 6:30 p.m., tomorrow at Fremont High in Sunnyvale.

"Now that we're out of the running, we need to focus on the league tournament and getting guys to CCS and state," Testa said.

Bellarmine dominated West Catholic Athletic League rival St. Francis 60-9 Jan. 26 in San Jose.

The Lancers only winners were Derek Supnet (132) and John Adams (217).

Gunn dropped a 44-21 decision to visiting Milpitas last Thursday.

Winning wrestlers for Gunn included Daniel Hu (121), Troy MaCurdy (132), Ben Chi (154), A.J. Isaac (162) and Mike Houlihan (191).
