The 65-53 win kept the Spartans tied with Gunn for first place in the SCVAL El Camino Division at 5-1. Mountain View coach Jim Forthoffer said this was the first triple overtime game of his career. "It's a little rare," Forthoffer said."It takes a lot out of you. and it's very exciting -especially since we won." After matching Saratoga at five points apiece in the first two overtimes, the Spartans went on a 15-3 run to put the game away. "Our double-teaming was more effective in the third overtime," Forthoffer said. "It forced (Saratoga) to make some mistakes." Mountain View (14-6 overall) was led by center Seth Greenstein, who tallied 21 points. Nic Lustig added 16. Gunn faced Saratoga last Friday, but the Titans didn't need overtime to win. Host Gunn (14-4 overall) pulled out a 58-55 victory behind Jamar Barnett's 20 points. Anthony Rea chipped in 16 points and Tom Sikic had 14. In a battle of the El Camino Division's worst teams last Friday, Monta Vista (1-6) took care of visiting Homestead 52-46. Homestead (2-5, 5-16 overall) was led by Steve Lambert's 14 points and Dat Lai's 10. Mustangs coach Matt Zehner said he has one goal for the second half of the season. "My goal is to not let this team fall apart," he said. "I want these guys to keep working hard and not quit." Moving to the upper part of the SCVAL, Los Altos last week posted its first De Anza Division win. The host Eagles beat Lynbrook 66-38 Jan. 27, as Geoff Patterson scored 20 points. Los Altos (1-6, 7-13) didn't have the same luck against visiting Milpitas last Friday, falling 64-50. Patterson again led the Eagles, pouring in 18 points. In West Catholic Athletic League action last Saturday, host St. Francis broke a four-game losing streak with a 74-59 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Lancers (4-4, 16-5) got 24 points from Chase Lyman and 13 from Ryan Hensel. Pinewood sunk to 1-6 in the Private Schools Athletic League and 3-15 overall Thursday with a 66-37 home loss to Menlo. |
