Power failure at the Sears department store in San Antonio Center triggered a widespread outage that left 496 customers without power for more than four hours on Sunday.

According to PG&E spokesman Scott Blakey, the outage originated from an underground cable at the Sears store, on the corner of San Antonio Road and El Camino Real. The cable, it turned out, fed into a PG&E line, triggering power shortages along Mundell Way, Loucks and Pasa Robles streets in Los Altos.

"It took crews time to figure out what was wrong," Blakey said.

He said PG&E will be working on separating the Sears line from the utility company's so that future outages will not occur.

The outage occurred from 3:03 p.m. to 7:20 p.m., Blakey said.
