The Gunn High boys basketball program is on the verge of accomplishing something it has not attained since 1981 - a league title.

The Titans took a big step toward that goal last Friday night, defeating host Mountain View 49-44 to grab sole possession of first place in the SCVAL El Camino Division.

Gunn (8-1 division, 17-4 overall) also avenged last month's 48-44 home loss to the Spartans (7-2, 15-7).

The two teams entered their showdown in a tie atop the El Camino Division. With three league games left, Gunn can win the league title outright with three victories and can do no worse than a co-championship with two wins.

"We're peaking well and the guys are playing with calm intensity," said second-year Gunn coach Mike Stack. "We have three games left and we'll take them one at a time."

On Jan. 15, Mountain View made 11 of 28 three-pointers in its four-point victory. Last Friday, however, Gunn held the Spartans to just three of 20 from three-point range and only 31 percent overall shooting from the floor.

Gunn never trailed and jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead. Senior guard Tom Sikic and senior forward Jamar Barnett led the Titans with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Senior Seth Greenstein tallied 13 points for Mountain View.

Gunn, which has won six games in a row and eight of its last nine, entertains Homestead (3-5, 6-16) at 7 p.m., today.

The Spartans, meanwhile, travel to Sunnyvale to take on Fremont at 7 p.m., today.

Earlier in the week, Mountain View whipped host Homestead 52-42.

Greenstein, last year's El Camino Division MVP, pumped in a game-high 24 points.

Homestead senior Matt Hoffman led the Mustangs with 15 points, which included a pair of three-pointers.

St. Francis (6-4, 19-5) pulled into a three-way tie for second place in the West Catholic Athletic League after sweeping Serra 62-46 and Riordan 54-48.

Junior Chase Lyman led the Lancers in scoring with 16 points in each game.

St. Francis plays at second-place Mitty at 7:30 p.m. today.

Pinewood won its second Private Schools Athletic League game of the season last Friday, edging host Woodside Priory 56-55.

Junior Mark Gardner and senior Eric Taggart paced the Panthers with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

The Panthers (2-7, 4-16) host Sacred Heart Prep at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Los Altos received 20 points from sophomore center Geoff Patterson Feb. 2, but the host Eagles still lost 44-38 to Santa Clara in SCVAL De Anza Division action.

Los Altos (1-7, 7-14) plays a 7 p.m. game at Los Gatos today.
