Prep Soccer Summary

he St. Francis High girls soccer team continued its domination of the SCVAL De Anza Division last week, posting a pair of shutouts.

The Lancers opened the week with a 3-0 home win Feb. 2 against the only division team they had not beaten this year: Los Gatos. The two teams tied earlier in the season, ruining St. Francis' chances of compiling a perfect division record.

The Lancers dominated the Wildcats this time around, though, getting goals from Julie Mariani, Kati McBain and Allison Wagner.

St. Francis then upped its division record to 12-0-1 last Thursday with a 4-0 triumph over visiting Monta Vista. Kristi Candau and Livia Baldaccini contributed two goals and one assist each.

The Lancers (16-1-3 overall), who have already clinched the division title, hosted Mountain View yesterday in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Pinewood isn't going to win its league, but the Panthers do have a firm grasp on second place in the Private Schools Athletic League.

The Panthers last week went to 9-2-1 in league and 10-6-1 overall with wins over Valley Christian-Dublin and Fremont Christian.

Pinewood edged host Valley Christian 2-1 Feb. 2 behind two goals by Linda Crites.

The Panthers then blanked visiting Fremont 4-0 Friday. Goals were scored by Jessica Green-Barnes, Tracy Ratko, Sonja Perakis and Crites, who also recorded an assist.

Gunn kept its playoff hopes alive last week with a pair of wins, pushing its record to 8-3-1 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 9-6-1 overall.

The Titans first beat visiting Milpitas 2-1 Feb. 2, getting both goals from Ja'net Lawrence.

Lawrence came through again on Thursday, scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Mountain View.

The Spartans, meanwhile, sunk to 0-9-4 in the De Anza Division and 2-13-5 overall. This guarantees they will finish the season in last place.

Los Altos had an up-and-down week in the De Anza Division.

The Eagles beat host Monta Vista 1-0 Feb. 2 and then dropped a 4-0 decision to visiting Los Gatos last Thursday. Rebecca Burnham scored the game-winning goal against Monta Vista.

Los Altos entered this week at 3-2-2 in the division and 7-2-2 overall.

Homestead fell out of first place in the SCVAL El Camino Division with a 2-0 loss to host Palo Alto last Thursday.

The Mustangs went to 7-1-3 in the division, while Paly improved to 8-1-2.

Boys

St. Francis won its opening-round game of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs last Saturday, beating St. Ignatius 1-0 in Mountain View.

Dan Van der Veen nailed the game winner, assisted by Noe Gil-Ochoa. The win put the Lancers at 15-4-2 overall.

Los Altos needed a win at Homestead yesterday to lock up the SCVAL De Anza Division title.

The Eagles put themselves in this position by beating Monta Vista 3-0 Feb. 2 and then tying Los Gatos 1-1 last Thursday. Arend Accola scored all three goals versus the Matadors, while Andreas Riter drilled the game winner against Los Gatos.

Los Altos entered Tuesday's division finale tied for first place with Palo Alto at 6-1-4. But the Eagles held the tie-breaker advantage, according to coach Vava Marques, because they beat Paly two weeks ago.

Homestead tied Milpitas 0-0 last Thursday, going to 5-3-3 in the division, 10-7-3 overall. A win over Los Altos would solidify their hold on third place.

Mountain View, meanwhile, won't be finishing anywhere near the top of the SCVAL El Camino Division.

The struggling Spartans entered this week at 1-7-3 in league play. They tied Cupertino and lost to Gunn last week.
