Prep Wrestling Wrap-Up
he Los Altos High wrestling team battled back from a 27-10 deficit to edge Fremont 28-27 last Thursday in Sunnyvale.
"That was probably the most exciting meet of my eight-year career," said Los Altos coach Nick Testa. "It was unbelievable."
Fremont jumped out to the big lead by dominating the lighter weight classes. The Eagles only won three of the first 10 matches, getting victories from Cesar Valle (125 pounds), Aaron Kash (130) and Matt Charles (152).
That left the onus on the bigger guys, and did they ever pull through. Los Altos won the final four matches and earned just enough points to eke out the win.
It all started with Noble Millie (172), who managed to beat his opponent despite suffering from the flu. Then came Chris Mazurkiewicz (189), who racked up some major points by pinning his guy in three minutes, 35 seconds. David West (215) followed with a hard-fought 4-3 win that stretched into double overtime. Heavyweight Anthony Davis finished things off by pinning his opponent - who out-weighed him by about 30 pounds - in a speedy 1:29.
"Davis did a great job," Testa said. "A pin was the only way we could have won and he came through."
The win pushed the Eagles' record to 3-1-1 in the SCVAL De Anza Division, guaranteeing them a second-place finish.
Los Altos (18-5-1 overall) moves on to the league tournament this Saturday (10 a.m.) at Monta Vista High in Cupertino. The top five wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Central Coast Section meet on Feb. 19.
St. Francis wins
