You reported on the very significant study completed by Drs. J. William Langston and Caroline Tanner at the Parkinson's Institute. In addition to serving patients with Parkinson's Disease, the institute also addresses the needs of other movement disorders. Not every tremor is a Parkinson's tremor. Essential tremor, which is my personal concern, is a different tremor, and needs to be treated with its own unique medications and therapies. The essential tremor support group at the Parkinson's Institute continues to help a great deal. There is also an International Tremor Foundation at 7046 West 105th Street in Overland Park, Kan. 66212. I owe many thanks to the Parkinson's Institute in Sunnyvale for their superb research and clinic. Rose KleinerLos Altos Hills Criticism of Boxer unjustified The harsh criticism of Senator Boxer (Feb. 10, letters to the editor) requires a response. Without Senator Boxer's help, Attorney General Reno is investigating Kenneth Starr and his staff of prosecutors for failing to disclose to the Justice Department their extensive assistance to Paula Jones' lawyers regarding Linda Tripp's illegal recordings of Monica's telephonic blatherings. Starr is being investigated by the Justice Department for abusing the authority to convene grand juries, and pressing witnesses with threats, offering witnesses immunity, all accompanied with the denial of witnesses' requests to call a lawyer, in violation of Justice Department rules. Starr is also being investigated by Judge Norma Holloway Johnson, a former colleague, for leaking secret grand jury information to the press. The latest leak about Starr's intent to indict a sitting president is just an added item to the two dozen leaks now being investigated by Special Master John Kern, a retired D.C. Court of Appeals judge, who will make his report to Judge Johnson. Moreover, it is reliably reported that Starr is currently under investigation by the D.C. Bar Counsel's Office of Professional Responsibility for apparent violations of the Canons of Ethics applicable to lawyers. Sam Dash, a Georgetown University law professor, and former special counsel, quit as Starr's ethics advisor because of Starr's overzealous effort to engineer the impeachment of the president. He concluded Starr's conduct was unethical. Mr. Starr's excesses now have Congress ready to abolish the Independent Counsel Statute because of Starr's unfettered expenditure of more than $50 million over five years with nothing to show for it but a peeping tom inquiry into President Clinton's private sexual peccadilloes. It is noteworthy that Bob Barr, when confronted with his own sworn perjury when he denied knowing his wife had an abortion, stated it was nobody's business, tracking Lewinsky's identical statement to the House managers. Clearly, none of this was Senator Boxer's doing. She was, however, right when she called for Starr's resignation. There are thousands of Californians who share that sentiment, including this writer. Charles HalleckRetired D.C. Superior Court Judge Los Altos Thank you, I'm fine I'm writing in regards to the front page article, "Finding housing solutions," in the Feb. 3 newspaper. I was mentioned in the article, and I'm afraid that a number of readers misinterpreted my living situation. I currently live in San Jose and commute to Los Altos to work. I am not looking for housing and am very happy where I now live. However, I would like to thank those thoughtful people who responded with housing offers. I stated in the article that "I would love to live in Los Altos." I was thinking of the future when I'm ready to purchase a home, although that may not be possible because of Los Altos' lack of housing and high prices. Laura KliewerSan Jose Looking for witnesses to hit-and-run accident I am an electrical contractor in Los Altos. On Feb. 3, I went into the Los Altos library at 10:02 a.m. to pick up videos, leaving my burgundy truck in the parking lot. At 10:20 a.m., I came back to my vehicle to find the whole passenger side smashed in, a hit-and-run. I was wondering if any of your readers may have witnessed this accident. I must say I am very disappointed at the person who never had the courtesy to leave a note. The police have pictures and the details. Brian Gausden Los Altos |
