"We had five-to-six storm drains plugged up that we cleared, and two-to-three tree limbs that fell -I'm not aware of any trees that came down. I think we got out of this one pretty lucky," said Brian McCarthy, Los Altos public works supervisor. Bruce Bane, the city's public works director, said the sporadic rains "have not soaked the ground enough to have the trees fall down." League forum on housing The League of Women Voters of the Los Altos-Mountain View Area welcomes the public to its special interest group program on housing, scheduled from 1-2:30 p.m., Feb. 24. The event will feature representatives from the cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View who will speak briefly and then answer questions from participants. Discussion will focus on issues such as low income housing, commuting and transportation problems, housing density, land use practices, state, county and local housing requirements and ordinances, and open space. The program, titled "Housing in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View: A Report on What's New and Where We are Going," will be held at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos (off of San Antonio Road). For more information, call the League office at 941-4846. Sprinkler head recall in effect The Santa Clara County Fire Department is notifying residents of an opportunity to benefit from a recall on Omega sprinkler heads that didn't activate in fires. Last October, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, came to a settlement agreement with the Central Sprinkler Corporation for a nationwide recall of all its sprinkler heads. The commission noted that the Omega sprinkler heads did not function properly in as many as 17 fires. The sprinklers had a failure rate of 30 to 40 percent. To request replacement sprinklers and receive reimbursement for installation costs, building owners must submit proof of claims and waiver release forms no later than Aug. 1. For more information, call the toll-free Omega hotline at 1-800-896-5685 or the fire department at (408) 378-4010. Commission items appealed to LAH council Two of three items heard before the Los Altos Hills Planning Commission last Wednesday will be heard on appeal by the town council at its March 4 meeting. The commission denied a request to delete a condition of approval on the lands of Wu and Chen, 26998 Beaver Lane that required a home addition be blended into the site's topography. Planning Director Curtis Williams said the commission had denied this request already several years ago. Both planning staff and the commission recommended against approval of a request to allow additional paved development area on the lands of Jain, 28510 Matadero Creek Lane. The commission Feb. 10 approved a request for a site development permit for a new 6,448-square foot one-story residence on the lands of Yam and To, 10475 Albertsworth Lane. The new home will have a maximum height of 20 1/2 feet and include an attached three-car garage and a swimming pool. - Town Crier Staff Reports |
