Prep Soccer Summary

he Los Altos High boys soccer team entered last Thursday's regular-season finale at Homestead needing a win to edge out Palo Alto for the SCVAL De Anza Division title.

The Eagles left with a 0-0 tie and a second-place finish.

"We didn't win, but I couldn't be more proud of my guys," Eagles coach Vava Marques said. "It was a great effort."

Marques said his team dominated most of the game, out-shooting the Mustangs 11-2. Only problem was, Los Altos couldn't convert any of these chances.

The Eagles' best chance came in the game's final minute, according to Marques.

Arend Accola had a one-on-one situation with the Mustangs' goalkeeper, but the forward couldn't squeeze the ball past him.

Los Altos finishes with a 6-1-5 division record, while Homestead winds up 5-3-4. Both teams are expected to make the Central Coast Sections playoffs, which started yesterday.

St. Francis, meanwhile, competed in the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs last week.

The Lancers (16-4-2 overall) beat host Serra 3-2 Feb. 10 in the semifinals and played at Bellarmine last Friday for the league championship. However, that game was played after the Town Crier went to press.

Gunn claimed the SCVAL El Camino Division title last Thursday without even having to play.

That's because Lynbrook, which was tied for first with Gunn, played host Mountain View to 1-all tie. That allowed the Titans to win the championship with a 10-1-1 mark. Lynbrook finished at 9-1-2.

Gunn put the pressure on Lynbrook two days earlier with a 1-0 win against visiting Wilcox. The Titans' lone goal came from Lumi Sonuga in the game's 70th minute.

Girls

The Homestead High girls soccer team came up a win short in its bid to capture the SCVAL El Camino Division title.

The Mustangs closed the regular season with a 3-0 win over host Wilcox Feb. 10 and needed division-leading Palo Alto to lose the next day in order to bring home the trophy.

Palo Alto failed to cooperate, though, pasting host Lynbrook by a 6-1 score.

This put Paly's record at 9-1-2 in the division, which was slightly better than Homestead's 8-1-3 mark.

The Mustangs (14-1-4 overall) were still expected to make this week's CCS playoffs, though.

With one league game to go, it looks like Pinewood will finish in second in the Private Schools Athletic League.

The Panthers eked out a 1-0 win at Notre Dame-San Jose to improve to 10-2-1 in league, 11-6-1 overall.

Tracy Ratko scored the game winner against Notre Dame on a shot in the first half.

The PSAL's top two teams are guaranteed playoffs spots.

Los Altos wrapped up its season Feb. 9 with a 1-0 loss to visiting Gunn

The Eagles wound up with a 3-7-2 mark in the SCVAL De Anza Division.

The Titans posted a 9-3-1 division record, which should be good enough to qualify them for the postseason.
