Socially Speaking

Socialnet.com: Any good social columnist worth her weight in "scoop" is always hungry for a tidbit that combines romance, socializing and the "Net." Los Altos Hills resident Patrick Ferrell, president and chief executive officer of Mountain View-based SocialNet, Inc. provided just the "Net scoop" we're all hungry for. After the recent rains sent a hill and tons of mud sliding down into his home on Atherton Court and when the mud was finally hauled away and his home was livable again, it was time for a celebration party. So Pat decided to have 130 (or so) of his closest friends over to celebrate "the big clean" and also to toast the recently completed venture capital funding for SocialNet. Inc., an innovator of secure interpersonal networking experiences, whether for personal or working relationships. It's billed as the "people you click with" place. So click on over to socialnet.com and check it out.

Hot, hot, hot : Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 1, for the 13th annual Silicon Valley Charity Ball that's sure to be the "hot" place to be. This year's theme, "Pursuit of Paradise," will sweep you away to a tropical destination filled with South Pacific splendor. Los Altos Hills resident and charity ball board member Susan Currie has been busy trying to keep up with demand for this year's gala. Formal invitations haven't even gone out and more than 2,000 attendees are booked. For tickets, call (408) 260-0594.

Citizen extraordinaire: Once again, Los Altos Hills resident Lew Platt, president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard, has been singled out for making a significant contribution to international understanding and respect between the people of other nations and the United States. He was honored by the International Diplomacy Council in San Francisco at the 13th annual International Ball held at the Westin St. Francis. Friend and Los Altos Hills neighbor John Chambers, president and chief executive officer of Cisco Systems, gave a heart-felt and much deserved presentation to Lew, recounting his numerous accomplishments in the field. Los Altos Hills City Council member Toni Casey was also in attendance to celebrate.

A shining jewel: The Upper Peninsula League of the San Francisco Symphony honored Hillsborough resident and community volunteer Brenda Jewett, the 1999 Black and White Ball chairwoman, at a cocktail reception hosted by Tiffany & Co., at their Stanford store. Los Altos resident and league member Noreen Sutherland was seen mingling with the crowd where she sipped champagne and viewed "Fancy Goods," the new little treasure from the Tiffany Permanent Collection.

Glitz 'n' Ritz style: Wilf and Sigrun Corrigan of Los Altos Hills were seen at the Ritz in San Francisco at a benefit for the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) to honor Nancy Mueller in celebration of the life of Glenn Mueller, chaired by San Franciscan Barbara Willenborg. The evening was full of glitz and glamour as well as a special tribute to Glenn. When sharing snippets of how wonderful the food and company were that evening, Wilf chimed in, "If you think the food, wine and jewels are eye stopping here, you can imagine what is in store for Sig when she attends Prince Charles' birthday party in London next week!" This private little soiree, for an intimate gathering of 200 of Charles' closest friends (and yes, Camilla was there), was held at the newly restored Windsor Castle. It was a benefit for London's Chamber Orchestra and Sig enjoyed every splendid moment of this very special once-in-a-lifetime event.
