In commemoration of InterAntional Women's Day, Ninotchka Rosca will sepak at 1:30 p.m., March 19 in Conference Room B as part of the Visiting Speaker Series. Rosca is a writer, novelist and human rights and women's rights activist. 'Positive actions' topic of seminar Dr. Jomary Hilliard will present "Feeling and Thinking: Teaching Our Children Strategies for Positive Actions" at 7:30 p.m., March 17 at Oak School. For more information, call 961-8818. Jewish School applications The Mid-Peninsula Jewish Community Day School will accept applications for the 1999-2000 school year through March 1. Enrollment applications received past the deadline date will be accepted on a space available basis. The K-6 school is in the process of expanding to grades 7 and 8. The school is one of 16 schools nationwide to receive a middle school development grant from the partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education. For more information, call 424-8482. Record swap at Foothill Foothill College's radio station, KFJC, is sponsoring a record swap from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the college's main dining hall, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. The event will feature rare vinyl and compact disc recordings. A $2 donation at the door is suggested. All proceeds will go to the operation of KFJC. There is also a $2 parking fee. In addition to music recordings, vendors will be selling video tapes, shirts and other memorabilia. KFJC, 89.7 FM, is a non-commercial station operated by students and community members who are enrolled in Foothill's radio department. It offers a wide variety of music and public affairs programming 24 hours a day. MV-LA Foundation nears fund-raising goal The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation is within $10,000 of reaching this year's goal of $152,000, thanks to those who contributed to the foundation during its annual fall fund-raising campaign. In order to meet the foundation's goal, foundation members will continue to accept contributions. Money raised through the foundation is used to help fund the district's tutorial centers, college and career center, and the purchase of science and technology equipment at both Los Altos and Mountain View high schools. Anyone interested in helping the foundation reach its goal, should send a tax-deductible contribution to MVLA High School Foundation, P.O. Box 1146, Los Altos 94023. Foothill joins gospel choirs As part of its month long African-American History Month celebration, Foothill College will host the 10th Annual Make a Joyful Noise gospel concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, in Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for students with ID, and $6 for seniors and children under age 7. Under the direction of guest chorus clinicians David Wells and Anthony Butler, vocalists from four South Bay choirs will perform a combination of African, traditional and contemporary spirituals and anthems. License plates for child safety Motorists can help support child safety programs in California by purchasing "Kids' Plates," vanity license plates that have either a heart, hand, star or plus symbol. Proceeds from these specialty plates support local and statewide child injury and abuse prevention programs and health and safety programs. More than $1 million has been generated from their sales. The California Department of Health Services, California Center for Childhood Injury Prevention and the Sierra Health Foundation are sponsoring the plates. For more information, call 1-800-Hey-KIDS. Jewish school hosts costume ball The Mid-Peninsula Jewish Community Day School will hold its annual Purim Ball from 7:30 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, at Crowne Plaza Cabana, 4290 El Camino Real, in Palo Alto. The event will benefit the school, which teaches all strands of Judaism. The event will include a kosher buffet, dancing, a casino, and a raffle. Party-goers are encouraged to come dressed as their wildest fantasy, organizers said. Tickets are $50 per person, $60 at the door. Sponsorships for the ball are available. The ball is limited to 700 guests. |
