Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian said he plans to announce the new member of the El Camino Hospital District board, by the next hospital board meeting, March 10.

Last November, two seats on the El Camino Hospital Board became available but only one person, Mark O'Connor, decided to run. According to state law, the vacant seat would be filled by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Since the hospital is in Simitian's fifth district, the supervisor has led the recruitment and selection process.

Simitian said 10 people applied for the vacancy.

Amy Carta, spokeswoman for Simitian, said the selection process has been reduced to five finalists, and the supervisor is going through the references of those five people. Simitian said the outstanding qualifications of the candidates has made the process difficult and has delayed a decision.

Of the 10 candidates who applied for the vacancy, four are from Los Altos. They are: Dick Hasenpflug, Dave Reeder, Jane Hall and Robert Summers.

Carta declined to say whether any of the Los Altos applicants are still in the running for the vacancy.

"I'm looking for someone to bring complementary skills to the present board that consists of three physicians and one health care professional," Simitian said.
