Foothill Roundup

Women's basketball

The Foothill women's basketball team earned the eighth seed in the NorCal playoffs and drew a first-round bye.

That meant the Owls didn't have to play until last night when they hosted No. 9 Sacramento City. The game was played after the Town Crier went to press.

If Foothill won the game, it likely will play at top-seeded Sierra at 7 p.m., Friday. That is, unless Ohlone pulled off a huge upset last night at Sierra.

The winner of Friday's game moves on to next week's state tournament, which features the top eight teams in California. Foothill has never qualified for state, according to coach Jody Craig.

Off the court, the Coast Conference last week announced its all-conference team. Six Foothill players were honored for their outstanding play.

Forward Ekuah Ramsey was voted North Division co-MVP, sharing the award with St. Francis High graduate Cortney Keegan of San Jose City.

Joining Ramsey on the all-conference first team were teammates Line Kongeskov (forward) and Shawna McGlennon (guard), another St. Francis grad. De Anza guard Alex Cribbs, a product of Pinewood School, also earned first-team honors.

Foothill's Stacy Hanstad (guard), Mia Sibug (guard) and Sheree Taft (forward) were named honorable mention.

Men's tennis

The Foothill men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in Coast Conference play last Thursday with a 9-0 home win over San Francisco. The Owls (3-2 overall) didn't lose a single set and won four of the matches in straight games.

Swimming

Randall Powell played the role of playoff hero last Friday, scoring the winning basket for the Foothill College men's basketball team.

The freshman hit a 5-foot jumper with 3.1 seconds left to lift the host Owls to a 64-63 victory over Lassen in the first round of the NorCal playoffs.

"It was a tough shot," Foothill coach Todd Petersen said. "There was a guy hanging all over him and there should have been a foul called."

Powell, who finished with a team-high 18 points, saved a game the Owls nearly let slip away.

Foothill (18-12) led most of the way and held a nine-point advantage with four minutes left. But No. 19 Lassen (24-10) charged back, going up by a point with 13 seconds remaining.

This gave the Owls more than enough time to work for the winning shot, though.

Petersen put the ball in the hands of point guard Tyler McClenahan and had his team spread the floor. With seven ticks left, McClenahan drove the lane - attracting a double team - and then dished the ball to Powell on the left baseline. Powell took one dribble and scored.

Foothill plays at No. 3 Porterville (27-4) at 7 p.m. tonight.

** missed drop char **

The Foothill men's and women's swim teams both opened Coast Conference competition last Friday by losing to visiting West Valley. The men fell 59-36, while the women lost 62-33.
