It has been several years since the Egan eighth graders last brought home the trophy. And the Vikings accomplished this task in fine fashion, finishing the 1998-99 season undefeated with a 7-0-2 record. The Feb. 11 championship game was one of Egan's toughest matches of the year. The Vikings beat Kennedy 2-1, needing two five-minute overtime periods to do so. Kennedy scored first and then Egan's Kip Hanson tied the game to force overtime. That's when the intensity really started to pick up. Egan scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining, as Garrett Herfkens slammed a shot into the back of the net. The goal was set up moments earlier when Hanson took a shot that deflected off a Kennedy player. Herfkens then corralled the ball and scored. |
