Interests: Matt calls himself an adventurer. "I like going on trips and seeing stuff," he said. For the past two years, he has spent his summers at an adventure camp where he has tried everything from kayaking, sailing and climbing to mountain biking. "There hasn't been anything I've been too scared to try, yet," he said. And if that's not enough to satisfy his adventurous side, Matt bikes both on- and off-road with his father for about two hours each Saturday and goes camping with Boy Scout Troop 37, of which he is a member. Matt also plays the trumpet, basketball and AYSO soccer. Highlights: Perhaps Matt is best known around Almond for raising and lowering the California and American flags in the front of the school - something he has done every school day for the past two and a half years, except the days he's been sick. "Then my sister does it for me," he said. Matt said he first raised the flags as part of his requirement to earn a citizenship badge for Boy Scouts. "I walked by the next day and (a school staff member) asked me if I would do it again, I said 'I guess.' " He has taken care of the flags ever since. A Boy Scout for one year, Matt is already working on his sixth badge. Philosophy: "Try everything," Matt said. Plans: Matt said he wanted to be a paleontologist when he was 6, but, "There's so many things, I don't know." Matt is certain about what he'll be doing the year he graduates from college. Matt said he plans to go on what he calls his "big adventure" - a bicycling trip around the world. He recently opened a bank account to start saving up for the trip, he said. |
