Making the grade

Teams from Pinewood School and Mountain View High last month were named winners of the Central Coast Section's 1999 Winter Season Scholastic Championship Team Awards. The awards recognize the varsity team from each CCS sport with the highest collective grade point average. Pinewood was tops in girls basketball (3.7590), boys basketball (3.6670) and boys soccer (3.5320). Mountain View won the award for girls soccer (3.6281). Runner-ups included the Los Altos High boys basketball team (3.5641) and the Pinewood girls soccer team (3.6270).

Withers honored

Los Altos Hills resident Callie Withers, a senior at Gunn High, last month was named to Parade's All-America High School Girls Soccer Team. Withers, a midfielder, was one of 40 players nationwide to be selected to the magazine's seventh annual team.

Soccer tryouts

The Mountain View-Los Altos Blitz, a select CYSA under-11 boys soccer team, is holding tryouts from 10 a.m. to noon this Sunday and noon to 2 p.m., March 28 at Los Altos High. The Blitz is coached by Tim Hanley, goalie coach for the San Jose Clash. Prospective players should RSVP Peter Johnson at 941-1605.

Fifty-Plus race Sunday

The Fifty-Plus 8-Kilometer Road Race and 5-Kilometer Walk will open its ranks to all age divisions for its 16th annual edition at 8 a.m., this Sunday. Senior runners, however, won't get lost in the shuffle around the Stanford University campus. Separate races for seniors and sub-seniors will also be held. As alternatives to the run and walk, participants may choose a swim, bicycle ride, triathlon, or in-line skate. Race-day registration is $20, $15 in advance.
