Lancers sneak by SHC

St. Francis evened its West Catholic Athletic League record to 1-1 last Friday by edging host Sacred Heart Cathedral 2-1.

The Lancers (5-4 overall) scored both runs in the fifth inning. Garrett Cook had two of St. Francis' five hits, including a double.

Starting pitcher Mike Sloan (1-1) earned the win.

MV fit to be tied

The frustration is mounting - and so are the losses - for coach Sandy Wihtol and his Los Altos High baseball team.

The Eagles enter tomorrow's 3:30 p.m. home game with Lynbrook still seeking their first win of the month-old season. Los Altos is 0-6 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 0-8 overall.

Five of the Eagles' losses have come in games where they were either ahead, tied or down a run going into the final inning.

"We hang tight, but then the other teams step up at the end and our guys don't," Wihtol said. "We need to do those extra little things that it takes to win. We need people to step up and make a play."

The team's most recent setback came last Thursday against visiting Palo Alto. The Eagles lost 4-3 in a game that was called after six innings due to darkness.

Brian Love generated most of Los Altos' offense, driving in all three runs. The junior tripled in the second inning to score the first run and then smacked a two-run homer in the sixth.

Mountain View played Lynbrook to a 5-all tie March 16 in San Jose.

The Spartans were down 5-1 after five innings, then scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The game was called due to darkness after the eighth.

Mountain View's offense was led by Ross Stanley, who had two hits and two RBI. Shamus Brady also drove in two runs and Robbie Parfett hit a triple.

The tie put the Spartans' record at 3-1-1 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 3-2-1 overall.

Mountain View plays Gunn on Thursday. For a preview of this game, see Page 55.
