Town Crier Staff Report

The deadline is nigh for suggesting an unsung hero - a selfless community volunteer - worthy of this year's Community Service Award sponsored by PenWest Realtors and the Los Altos Town Crier.

Residents have until this Thursday (April 1) to nominate that person or persons for the annual honor.

Candidates cannot be members of PenWest. All nominations must be submitted to the Peninsula West Valley Association of Realtors, 321 Second St., Los Altos 94022.

In its 36th year, the event is meant to honor a person or persons who best contributed in a meaningful way to the quality, spirit and character of the communities of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. The traditional award, punctuated by an annual awards luncheon, began in 1964.

Former Los Altos mayor Roy Dunnett was the first recipient and he continues to live in Los Altos to this day. Marge Bruno, another former mayor, was awarded the honor last year.

In 1997 the Los Altos Town Crier began co-sponsoring the event with the local real estate agents, providing publicity and support for the event. The Town Crier staff is not involved in the selection of the winner, however.

Lissi Bedford of Seville Properties again heads up this year's selection committee.

This year's winner will be honored at a Community Service Award Luncheon May 5 at Michael's at Shoreline in Mountain View.

The luncheon is open to the public. Cost is $22. For more information, nomination forms or luncheon reservations, call Shannon Elam at 949-9115.
