Menlo School will host the Special Olympics of San Mateo County track and field competition at 9 a.m., April 17, at Cartan Field on the Menlo School campus, 50 Valparaiso Ave., Atherton.
This is the seventh year the school has hosted the event, which is expected to draw more than 100 athletes from ages 8 to 60.
The event is free and open to the public.
Writers' conference at Los Altos High
Los Altos High School is hosting its 14th annual writers' conference today through Friday. Since the start of this week, a variety of published writers have shared their writing and experiences as authors with students. Guest writers include journalists Anne McCarroll, Ann Killion and Mark Purdy, poets Alejandro Murguia and David Sharp, and three former Los Altos High students, Raj Mathai, Suzanne Marmion and Edward Sanchez, all of whom are journalists.
The conference was first held in 1985 after a group of English teachers initiated the event. The conference is funded by the Los Altos High School Parent Group and the School Site Council.
MS association offers scholarships
High school and college students may compete for college scholarship awards through a the national essay competition, PROJECT: Learn MS '99. Sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, the program is designed to educate students about Multiple Sclerosis, a crippling disease that affects young adults.
The competition is open to high school juniors and seniors, and college freshmen and sophomores.
Entries must be postmarked by June 5. Students may obtain an official registration form by calling 1-800-LEARN MS.
State offers proficiency exam
The State Board of Education is offering the California High School Proficiency Examination for anyone who wants to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. Proficiency is defined as the average performance of a second semester senior in a California public high school.
The exam is open to anyone 16 or older, whether enrolled in school or not. The three-hour test will be held April 24 at 73 sites, including Oak Grove High School in San Jose and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

School benefit day at The Klutz Store
The Klutz Store will hold its fourth Give-It-All-Away School Benefit Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 15, at 572 College Ave., in Palo Alto.
The store will give away 101 percent of its earnings to public schools. If a customer, for example, spends $100 at the store, the store will donate $101 to the public school of that person's choice.
The store donated more than $24,000 to 82 schools last year.
The event will also include musicians, authors, clowns, face painters and the Stanford Marching Band.

Class of '79 holds reunion
The Los Altos High School Class of 1979 will hold its 20-year class reunion at 6 p.m., May 22, at the Sheraton Palo Alto on El Camino Real.
Chance to appear on 'Chicago Hope'
Residents have the opportunity to bid for a guest appearance on the television show, "Chicago Hope," as part of Santa Rita School's annual silent auction.
The highest bidder will receive two plane tickets to Los Angeles and a television appearance on the set of the weekly show.
The "Chicago Hope" package is a preview item for the school's auction, which will be held May 15.
Those who wish to bid for a part on the show must be 18 or older.
