LA Council cancels next Tuesday meeting
Published on 04/07/1999

The Los Altos City Council has canceled its regular meeting scheduled for next Tuesday. It became a scheduling problem, with school vacation, said city clerk Carol Scharz. Also, there was nothing that couldn't wait until the regularly scheduled April 27 meeting, Scharz said.

Economic impact of overlay zoning

Los Altos Planning Director Larry Tong reported at the March 23 city council meeting that the city staff cannot find anyone to comment on the economic effects of having a one-story overlay zone in their city.

Residents from Jay Street in Los Altos had asked the city council to consider a one-story overlay zone that would prevent two-story houses in their neighborhood.

The council asked city staff to research the effect on property values if an area is zoned to exclude two-story houses.

Currently, the city's residential design guideline task force is considering one-story overlay zones as a possible recommendation for responding to neighbor requests to "maintain the integrity of their neighborhood." Read: no two-story houses on the street.

Sheriff investigates single-car LAH accident

The sheriff's department is investigating a single-car minor injury accident that occurred about 9 p.m. last Thursday on Altamont Road near Altamont Court in Los Altos Hills.

A 1985 Chevy Camero hit a utility pole, knocking down power lines, said Sgt. John Hirokawa of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office. The driver is a 19-year-old from Mountain View.

"The cause (of the accident) is under investigation," Hirokawa said. Sheriff deputies remained at the scene from 9-11:40 p.m.

PG&E spokesman Scott Blakey said 31 customers were left without power from about 9:15 p.m., April 1, to 5:50 a.m., April 2. "They had to put a new pole in," he said.

Anyone with information about the accident should call investigators Doug Havig or Craig Sontra at (408) 867-9715.
