As NATO forces continue with missions in Yugoslavia, including Kosovo, the global Red Cross movement, including a chapter based in Palo Alto, has a mission of their own. Along with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, the American Red Cross is providing emergency food, medical assistance, shelter and protection to the victims of the current crisis.

"According to assessments, the populations with the most dire human needs in the region will be women, children and the elderly," said Lucianne Phillips, executive director of the Palo Alto Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Currently, the international Red Cross movement is the only active humanitarian agency still working in Kosovo. Other Red Cross units are also providing relief to refugees in other areas of Yugoslavia, including Serbia and Montenegro, and the surrounding countries of Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The American Red Cross has been actively engaged in the Balkans conflict since 1993, providing more than $35 million worth of aid and sending more than 40 delegates to the area.

Red Cross officials said the best way to help the victims of this conflict is through a cash donation. Contributions can be made to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and sent to 400 Mitchell Lane, Palo Alto 94301 or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW.
