Town Crier Staff Report

Los Altos residents Matt Bordoni and Gavin Zack both took home plaques last month at "Da" Mayor's 1,500-meter Championships in San Francisco.

Bordoni and Zack, seventh graders at St. Simon School in Los Altos, were among the more than 800 runners to compete at the annual race at Kezar Stadium.

The best age-group athletes in the Bay Area were invited to the race.

Runners competed by year of birth, thus these two boys competed in different age groups even though they're both 13 years old.

In the race of boys born in 1985, Zack earned first-place honors with a time of 5 minutes, 2.3 seconds.

This was Zack's first-ever 1,500 race.

In the race of boys born in 1986, Bordoni finished second to last year's Junior Olympics National Champion, Chris Dominic of Pleasanton. Bordoni clocked a personal best of 4:53.7.

Both local boys received plaques commemorating their achievements in a ceremony attended by San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and 100-meter world champion Maurice Greene.
