The Los Altos Art Docents held their annual Student Art Show March 25-28 at Hillview Center. Docents said the show was "a tremedous success," with record attendance this year by students, families and residents.
Artwork by every child in Los Altos schools was showcased, from kindergarten through 6th grade. Egan and Blach Junior High Schools students also had their artwork on display.
More than 3,300 pieces of art were hung or displayed in several rooms at Hillview Center. The preparations came together during an intense two-day period for the Los Altos Art Docents. The docents transported the art from each school to Hillview Center. They then attached recognition ribbons to each piece of art, prepared several display boards, and individually hung each piece of art. The docents concluded by preparing a preview reception for school and community dignitaries and the Docents' families.
The Art Docents' "hands-on" activities were a highlight for children visiting the galleries on Saturday afternoon. Activities included making pipe cleaner designs, creating crazy hats out of construction paper, drawing "scratch art" designs (crayon overlayed with black tempra paint), and designing personalized rubber stamps and then making cards with them.
The Los Altos Art Docents is a volunteer organization that provides more than 40 classes in watercolor, clay sculpture, brush painting, graphic design, print making, and art appreciation for kindergarten through eighth grade in the Los Altos schools.
