Student Profile

Name: Daniel Cooper

School: Cooper is a freshman at Los Altos High School.

Interests: The 14-year-old said he hasn't experienced any first-year high school jitters - thanks to some advice from his older sister. He's found high school to be a good springboard for trying new things, he said.

Cooper joined the junior varsity swim team and plans to try out for water polo next year, he said.

When Cooper isn't in the water, he's playing goalie for his AYSO soccer team, he said, adding that soccer is his favorite sport.

Cooper plans to campaign for the Associated Student Body's sophomore class council president this month.

Highlights: Cooper was one of only 160 students from around the world recently selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference at Stanford University this summer. The program is designed to get students to think on their feet.

During the 11-day program, "Law & Advocacy," Cooper will assume the role of a trial attorney in court, formulate an argument before a jury and field questions from a panel of renowned legal scholars.

Cooper said he was "definitely excited. I just got an envelope in the mail that said 'you have been nominated ...'. I didn't know what it was at all." Cooper's school adviser, Wynne Satterwhite, nominated him.

He said he was nervous about the leadership program the first time he saw brochures about it.

"They all looked so much older than me," he said. "I wasn't sure about it - but now I don't think it will be that bad."

Philosophy: Cooper said he doesn't know if he's a leader but, "I know I can lead people if they are committed to something."

Future plans: Cooper said, "Everything's still open."
