Special to the Town Crier
The free 1999 directory of Northern California summer camps accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA) is available now by calling (800) 362-2236. The information is also available online at www.aca-camps.org
The booklet lists more than 100 day and residential camps, as well as approved camp sites. In addition to the more traditional camps, the directory includes family camps, special interest camps and camps for special populations, such as the disabled and children with certain illnesses. Several camps have expanded programs for teens. Many have sliding-scale fees or scholarships for needy families.
"The camp experience helps children mature socially, emotionally, intellectually and morally," said Denise Thomson, president of the Northern California section of the ACA.
"In the camp setting, children learn to develop creative skills and gain confidence. In short, camp does kids a world of good."
Founded in 1910, the American Camp Association is the only organization in the United States providing accreditation to all types of camps. ACA accreditation verifies that a camp complies with up to 300 standards established for living areas, food service, emergency preparedness, program practices, health care, personnel, transportation and administrative procedures.
