A whole latté love: It's 6 a.m. outside of Starbucks in downtown Los Altos. Tall, lanky brunette Christy Howells (daughter of Linda and Bob Howells of Los Altos Hills), dressed in hospital scrubs, sits enjoying her morning coffee, with her left foot encased in a huge orange cast propped on the chair in front of her. In walks tall, outdoorsy Arne Ericson.
The brunette catches his eye, he tries to get her attention (she's too busy reading the sports page) and he, instead, casually walks by her chair, taps the end of her cast, smiles and says "ouch." She glances up, says "Ha, ha."
Next day, same time, same place, different strategy. Arne enlists his dog, Otter, in the dance for Christy's attention. It works!
A few days later, Christy is back again for her morning coffee - so is Arne. Next night, the two meet for dinner. That night, Christy announces to her family she has met the man she is going to marry. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Christy and Arne were married March 13 at St. Simon Catholic Church in Los Altos. So for all you singles out there, looking for Mr. or Ms. Right, head on down to Starbucks. You might be as lucky as Christy and Arne.
Laundry room party: When the president comes to town, you can bet that the big-name supporters are going to be there to cheer him on. Such was the case when San Franciscans Gordon and Anne Getty hosted a fund raiser in their home for President Clinton and a group of 200 of his most local supporters.
Los Altos Hills residents George and Judy Marcus were invited to participate in this special evening and were kind enough to take a few moments to pause for a picture before going inside. When I heard that the dinner was at the Gettys, I just had to call my friends, Barb and Jim Willenborg, who happen to be next door neighbors of the Gettys.
Not wanting to miss out on this evening, Barb decided it was only appropriate to host her own "fun-raiser." And the laundry room, on their third floor, was the perfect viewing area to catch Bill addressing this intimate soiree. So imagine, if you will, 30 people taking turns climbing onto the clothes washer and peering out the window to get a bird's-eye view of Bill, arms around the shoulders of the two women seated on either side of him. Now that's what I call a very special Kodak moment!
Glitz and glam: The 12th annual Denim to Diamonds, a benefit for the Ronald McDonald House, proved once again that it is the best party on the Peninsula. This year's event, held at Bay Meadows in San Mateo, and chaired by Los Altos area residents, Shelley LeFevre, Peggy Hunt, Roy Brant and emeritus chairwoman Karin Klarreich, netted a whopping $396,000. Gentry magazine hosted the "After Hours Gala" benefiting Family Service Mid-Peninsula.
