New city position, assistant public works

The city of Los Altos is close to naming a new assistant public works director, a new city position, said Layne Long, assistant to the Los Altos city manager.

The person will be overseeing the day-to-day operations of the public works department's two divisions, engineering and maintenance. "It will bring a high level of expertise to the public works department," Long said.

And it will free up director of public works "Bruce's (Bane) time to deal with major issues," said Phil Rose, Los Altos city manager. The department has a staff of 38 and is responsible for a budget of about $8 million.
