Badminton

The Mountain View badminton team last week completed an undefeated SCVAL El Camino Division season and captured its first-ever league title.

On April 26, the Spartans posted their second shutout of the season by routing host Los Gatos 60-0. Two days later, Mountain View (11-0, 11-4) closed out league play with a 52-12 victory at Homestead (6-5).

"I'm extremely pleased with the team's performance," coach Kelly Kuboyama said. "They've far exceeded my expectations."

No. 1 girls singles player Wen-Ai Yu finished undefeated in league, as did Mountain View's top boys doubles team of Seth Greenstein-Dat Tran.

The Spartans host the El Camino Division individual tournament this week, which runs Tuesday through Thursday. Winners move to the SCVAL finals Saturday at Palo Alto High to face the De Anza Division winners.

Gymnastics

Despite finishing second in the SCVAL De Anza Division, the Mountain View High golf team won't be going to the playoffs.

The Spartans (8-3) played El Camino Division champion Saratoga (12-0) last Thursday for the league's second and final Central Coast Section berth, and they lost 201-235. Mountain View had only two players shoot under 90 at Milpitas' Summit Point: Philip Plum (82) and Scott Kim (87).

In other golf action, St. Francis High bounced back from a 188-197 loss to Bellarmine April 26 with a 201-235 non-league win over Valley Christian-Dublin last Thursday at Poppy Ridge. Tyler Martin paced the Lancers (11-3, 13-5) with a 36, while Brett Sollers and John Colyar each shot 40.

St. Francis (6-0) edged visiting Gunn High 177.20-176 last Thursday in a non-league meet.

St. Francis sophomore Noreen Juliano took the all-around title with a score of 37.75.
