Ranch at Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills have teamed up with the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy of Woodside for a horse show and play day, noon, this Sunday, at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road, in Los Altos Hills. The three riding programs offer children and young adults with special needs riding lessons that may include equitation instruction, games and trail rides. The event comprises 15 classes in which riders will show their skills and games ranging from pole bending to musical stalls and a trail obstacle course. 'Shadow, Fire, Snow' at Los Altos library Author Patricia Albers writes about Tina Modotti, an actress in San Francisco's Italian-language theater who went on to become a brilliant, but largely unnoticed photographer, in a new book, "Shadows, Fire, Snow: The Life of Tina Modotti." Albers is scheduled for a book signing 7 p.m., next Tuesday, in the Program Room of the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road. In collaboration with the Friends of the Los Altos Library and Heintzelman's Bookstore, members of the Association of the Los Altos Historical Museum is presenting the event, which also includes a slide show and talk, in celebration of International Museum Day. On Thursday, Newcomers will meet at the historic Los Altos Hills home of Frank and Josephine Duveneck at Hidden Villa for coffee to learn more about this 1,600-acre organic farm, wilderness preserve and education center. Local Red Cross helps after tornadoes The Palo Alto chapter of the American Red Cross announced last week it was providing help in the aftermath of killer tornadoes that leveled communities in Oklahoma and Kansas May 3. "As soon as the tornadoes had passed, the Red Cross was on the scene providing food, shelter, first aid and mental health counseling," said Steve Bullock, Red Cross acting president. In Oklahoma, the Red Cross opened 10 shelters, serving 1,600 residents. In Kansas, at least 200 residents stayed in three shelters. Those looking to help victims may make a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-HELP NOW, or accessing www.redcross.org on the Internet. Y2K workshop at Union Presbyterian Residents interested in knowing more and being prepared for potential problems posed by Y2K are invited to a free workshop, titled "Y2K and Beyond: Prepared, Not Panicked." The event is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at Union Presbyterian Church, 858 University Ave., Los Altos. 'Run for Survival' at Foothill College Learn about the cheetah's abilities, habitat and plight when the Cheetah Conservation Fund presents "The Run for Survival" 1 to 4 p.m., May 22, at Foothill College Stadium in Los Altos Hills. The event will include an appearance by Samburu the cheetah running at top speed, famed wildlife artist Bob Newell, actress Tippi Hedren and an African drum performance. Help arthritis, win a diamond Local volunteers of the Arthritis Foundation are conducting a $10,000 diamond raffle with only 100 tickets being offered at $100 each. The prize is a one carat, brilliant cut, round diamond, provided by Diamonds of Palo Alto, appraised at more than $10,000. Gift shop manager for education center Volunteer management assignments are currently being considered for the new Education Center at the Los Altos History House Museum. Organizers are seeking a gift shop manager who would be responsible for buying and arranging stock, scheduling and training staff, and overseeing and reporting sales. Museum supporters are expecting a groundbreaking for the center by this summer. Help needed for Chefs Who Care The Community Services Agency is looking for two volunteers who can lead its long-standing Chefs Who Care fund-raiser. The program, in which restaurants contribute proceeds to the agency through a once-a-month Monday dinner, is currently in limbo with the lack of help.
