While most girls headed to their parents' Bay Area offices for "Take Your Daughter to Work" day, April 22, Claire Pullen boarded a plane to Washington, D.C. to shadow U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. The Santa Rita fifth-grader was one of five girls Landrieu invited to spend the day working alongside her. About 55 million parents nationwide took their daughters to work for the event, which was launched seven years ago to enhance girls' self-esteem.

Landrieu, who attended Louisiana State University with Claire's mother, Mary Pullen, said she wanted to provide the girls the opportunity to see that they don't have to choose between being good mothers or good workers.

As part of the shadowing, Claire accompanied Landrieu to areas of the senate where few members of the public are admitted, Claire said.

"It was a real 'girl power' kind of day," Mary Pullen said.

Claire said she doesn't plan on pursuing a political career.
